Size twelve feet in size six heels

Penance is
the pain of pinched toes
and blistered soles,

Hard calluses
grown grotesque
on gnarly roots.

ankle straps
that chaff and choke,
like ten inch heels
on size six boots

Walking crooked
river banks
defined by twisted
mouths and bitter
verse.

A brake-less train
bends and buckles
on converging rails.

I’m hacking laces,
cutting tongues.
Walking miles
on straighter road.

Escape is;
well worn shoes
of softer leather.
