Night Driving

Eyes wide,
face glaring back
from a black screen.
Breath condensing
on frosted glass.

White shadows
loom and leap
from dark asphalt.
Fingers gloved, toes numb
gauges still read zero.

Wilderness ahead,
etched in moonlit definition,
blurs on speeding approach,

Herb and hedge emerge
from flying parabolic lines,
merge into feathered ghosts
of darkness.

Flashes of green,
witness to an audience
of the horned and clawed.
I am not alone
on this lonely winter road
