A Promise Kept

I’ve been that pendulum,
The too and fro
lived the life of a minstrel
head high and ass low,

Balanced bread budgets
with tailor made cigarettes
and borrowed blue bottles
of bleeding regrets

I’ve cut corners with love
flown high as brown kites
with dreams packed away
in your hand rolled joints.

I saved all the pennies
from lets pretend lockets
and the lint from frayed linings
of a piss-house poet’s pockets.

Placed it all on a sin
of flickering mars
outrun by the arc
of the moon and stars

I walked crooked miles
on littered grass verges
sought fortunes in ditches
and in dikes dug for treasures.

Built pedestals of briars
and thrones of stone
and crowned them all
with your love alone

Heels blistered and bleeding,
hobbling green miles
in hand-me-down verse
from mans crooked styles

I worked in field
and behind big rig horns.
I cut hay in the south
baled it in summer warm storms,

I’ve drank kings fortunes
and blew children’s ransoms,
to a sycophant world
I’ve made myself handsome

Spent my wages on hookers
and three legged screws
but I saved all the slips and the tips
for you.

Inspired by Leonards letter to Marianne

“And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road.”
