I met a man

I met a stranger today
in a dry river bed,
on a volcanic mountain.
he was tall and rangy as me
but younger
and less certain
of new found feet.

We spoke
of seashells,
whales, basking sharks
buses and cars
We talked of
flint & fire.
fears & desires,
dreads & ambitions.
I looked at him,
saw a reflection
but still I could not place him.

Then he dropped a strong arm
about my shoulder
And he said in the voice
he always had.
“I love you Dad”
I recognized him then,
my only son
who while I looked away
had grown into a man
