the top field

the top field is thin,
the soils sharp shale and shit.
not fit to grow crops worth a damn

but in mid-may
before we trim it to make rough cow hay
it blooms in pinks, blues, reds and yellow
to my knees

and speaks to me in tongues
of mayflies and honey bees.
