another family song

spinning in concentric circles
tracking changes
in different sky

grounded in the same dirt
too much blood under fingernails
too much bitterness

that sickness we called family
consumptive confusion of want
and enmity

it killed me a little every day
by fifteen I was gone
another cowboy’s song

we didn’t speak then
a drought of words
between a mother and a son

it took ten years of hunger and want
to finally bring me back
to look at you and be with you

We became acquaintances
when I was twenty six
estrangement saved our relationship
