biography of a mayfly

born
on silver
summer iris flags.
Iridescent

beams.
rippling streams
on gentle flows
he drags.

darting day,
a fortnight,
a month, a life.

dally an hour
a year
shimmering
In pearlescent light

hanging,
air above
shadow lair
of snarling pike.

gondolier
poling a stem
of seeded grass

golden lover
of a gleaming
buttercup.

brown wing
drowns
rises up again.
splash unheard

he flies.
unseen
dies red
in setting suns.
