I understand

I understand, in the way
        the boulder understands
                    the heart of the mountain
                          or a fish understands
                     the yearning of the sea
that beats itself with its yearning
on jagged rocks and soft sand.

I understand in the way
       the wind understands
                the voices of trees
                    or the rumbling of land
                        under a soft hand,
                        echoes of tidal floes
                       and all that grows
                      where oceans
          once kissed a cold bed
     where grass now bends
in understanding of waves.
